"I had no idea there was so much help out there" patient's quote.
MidSight is our information and advice service in hospitals for patients attending eye clinics. Our MidSight Hospital Information Points provide a wealth of information on such issues as eye conditions, how to make the most of your sight, blind clubs, specialised holiday venues, NHS Eye Services and many other sources of local support. In some hospitals we also have displays of daily living aids, and help is offered in ordering these.
MidSight works closely with the team of Consultant Ophthalmologists in the eye clinics. When a patient is registered as blind or partially sighted, or told there is no further help available for their eye condition, they can be in shock. MidSight's vital role is to provide immediate support and to ensure that the patient is aware of all the services available. Also, at this point, a patient can be referred directly to one of our other services, perhaps to the Home Visiting Scheme or the local blind club, it may even be to re-learn how to use a computer when you have poor sight. Often a chat and a word of reassurance or a leaflet explaining your eye condition can help take away the fear patients sometimes experience.
"We rely on the MidSight volunteers for their help in taking the time to talk to patients with visual disabilities, counsel them and provide a wealth of advice and knowledge about the facilities available locally and nationally to help them." Ms Jenni Forbes, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Edgware Community Hospital.
The MidSight Service can give hope to patients about the different ways to ensure they can continue to enjoy their lives, even with poor sight. This can make all the difference in how they and their families cope with the changes and challenges in the future.
MidSight's hospital desks are run primarily by trained volunteers backed up by the Association's own professional staff. There are currently MidSight Hospital Information Points in the following hospitals:
