Home Visiting Service

The Association's dedicated team of 16 staff and approximately 300 trained volunteers provide a Home Visiting Service for people who are blind, partially sighted and deaf /blind. We aim to assist people with vital support to enable them to continue to live independently in their own homes.

Many of the tasks that those of us with sight take for granted, can become quite impossible for someone who is blind or partially sighted. Everyday tasks such as reading mail, colour coordinating clothes, visiting friends etc. can become quite daunting without a "good" pair of eyes to help. Additionally for many, the loss of sight can result in a loss of confidence, isolation and depression.

The Association's Home Visiting Service is unique in that it compliments the work carried out by the Rehabilitation Officers and other professionals. Often our clients live alone or feel isolated and would simply like befriending, whilst others need more practical assistance. Our staff and trained volunteers (who are all CRB checked) provide support in the form of help with daily living such as assistance with reading the post, writing letters, shopping and visits to the GP.

Michael and ShahinaShahina is Michael's volunteer home visitor. He says "Shaheena has been my home visitor for over a year now. Her visit is one of my highlights of the week. She is a technical whizz and helps me use the computer to type my plays, she programs my answerphone and helps me sort out my eye drops!"

Laura's home visitor Florence has a unique relationship with her home visiting volunteer, Laura.

While Florence is registered partially sighted, Laura is registered deaf. So, in return for help where good sight is required, Florence helps Laura whenever a good pair of ears is needed.

Fortunately, Laura lives quite near to Florence so is able to do home visits most days. She reads Florence's post and newspapers. Laura also accompanies Florence on outings to visit friends, places of interest and shopping trips.

Audrey copes amazingly well with the effects of Multiple Sclerosis. Being registered blind, and a wheelchair user, does not deter Audrey from enjoying a full and varied life. On her weekly home visits, Tina helps Audrey to organise theatre and cinema trips, literature and study materials delivered to her home and Audrey recently even managed a rare holiday to the Lake District!
