Insight Radio, Europe's first radio service for blind and partially sighted people, has been launched on Sky Channel 0188. The launch on digital satellite will make the station more accessible across the UK, whilst it continues to broadcast live on the internet.
The station, which currently broadcasts from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, offers blind and partially sighted listeners a varied programme ranging from newspaper and magazine reviews through music request programmes to interactive phone-ins and lifestyle and feature programmes.
Manager of Insight Radio Ross Macfadyen, said: "The radio station of RNIB has had a brilliant year. WE re-launched as Insight Radio, won a Sony Award and opened our FM transmitter in Glasgow. Now the move onto the Sky Digital platform makes this unique radio service more available and more accessible to a much wider and bigger audience across the country. We're looking forward to a great working relationship with the team at Sky."
If you've been to the British Blind Sports link and read about all the sports that you can take part in, you'll realise that there are still lots of activities you can do in spite of having little or no vision.
However, it's understandable that not everyone wants to get involved in sporting activities and might want something a little more sedate to do.
As a starting point, we suggest you read the excellent article by Anne Sunman, entitled Hobbies, Sports and Pastimes - A Guide to help Visually Impaired People.
When Anne lost her sight she found she couldn't find any literature for her family to read about blindness, so she set about designing an information leaflet, this soon became a series.
Gardening is another hobby which, with a little adaptation, can continue to be a worthwhile and interesting pursuit. You can read some excellent advice at Kent Association for the Blind's Useful Advice - Gardening Tips.
Cookery Uncovered is run by David Rowles who has been a restauranteur and chef in north London for more than twenty years. David offers cookery courses for children and adults, registered with sight loss. If you would like further details you can contact David direct at info@cookeryuncovered.com or by telephone on 020 7916 2382.
Of course, surfing the net and using your computer may either be something you've done for ages or you're just getting to grips with.
There are links lower down this page to web pages that have been created by and for people with a visual impairment. These pages provide lots of useful information and further links that you might want to explore.
Talking Computers! No, we don't mean JAWS or Kurzweill. Talking Computers is a free monthly audio magazine about using computers; especially for visually-impaired people who use screen-readers and other aids.
All the editing and copying is done by volunteers. All of the articles on the tapes are provided by the listeners.
Please do not be put off by this, the subjects dealt with on the tapes are not usually complex, some of the articles may prove useful to the sighted as well and many of the web sites recommended on this sight are not only for the visually-impaired, but are sights that have been found easy to use.
If you've only just started using a computer or if you're finding difficulty using the computer with the onset of your visual impairment, why not consider our IT training?
Our short courses offer one-to-one training in basic computing and using the internet and you can read more about this at MAB's Computer Training page.
